Ancient Macau, Fireworks & Mooncakes

Tour historic sites, learn how to make mooncakes, and savor skyline views — and a fireworks display! — from Macau Tower.

About Your Trip

Marvel at the bustling city of Macau, a small self-governing region within China, and see what makes it so special as you visit its famous landmarks and top attractions. Your adventure begins with a fun workshop where you’ll learn to make mooncakes — a traditional treat typically served during Mid-Autumn Festival. Then, you’ll visit one of the oldest Taoist temples in the city, A-Ma, and head to UNESCO-protected Ruins of St. Paul’s cathedral, a grand church that finally succumbed to an 1835 typhoon after surviving multiple fires since its construction in 1580. You’ll also see Senado Square, the city’s time-honored urban center that still hosts public events and celebrations today.

Next, it’s off to the iconic Macau Tower — from one of the observation desks, you’ll get a breathtaking 360-degree view of the area. During dinner, enjoy a special fireworks display, part of the Macau International Fireworks Display Contest.

Also take advantage of a leisure day to explore Macau Fisherman’s Wharf which offers a wide range of dining and shopping options as well as entertainment facilities and a marina. Or, consider visiting additional nearby sites, such as St. Augustine’s Church, St. Lawrence’s Church and St. Joseph’s Church.

What we love:
• UNESCO lauds the Ruins of St. Paul’s as part of the Historic Centre of Macau World Heritage site.
• Though it began in 1989 with only 5 teams, the Macau International Fireworks Display Contest now features more than 100 competing teams from Thailand, China, Philippines, Japan, Germany, Spain, Portugal and many more.
• Try your luck at one of the city’s extravagant casinos. Unlike cities in China, gambling is allowed in the autonomous region of Macau — it’s known locally and abroad as the “Las Vegas of Asia.”

Destination

Macau, a contemporary hub for business, entertainment and travel, has humble mid-16th century origins as a small silk-trading port. Its position on the Pearl River Delta’s western side makes it a convenient and scenic stop for visitors from within the region and from around the world.

Modern Macau balances Eastern and Western influences, making it one of the world’s most interesting and diverse destinations in China. Its combination of Portuguese and Chinese cultures is apparent in the region’s various festivals, holidays and other events celebrated throughout the year. Nicknamed the "Las Vegas of Asia," the city is known for its abundance of shopping malls, casinos, opulent hotels and fine-dining options.
